Go Challenge October 14, 2016

10/14/2016 - 10/16/2016 2016

GO Challenge 2016

Location:  Tamaracouta Scout Reserve

Mark this date in your Venturer calendar:  October 16 to 18, 2016

GO Challenge is a Venturer event that challenges the abilities of our youth in a competition.  Venturers team up in groups of 4 to complete a series of 8 challenges. A course is laid out along the trails at Camp Tamaracouta. The participants receive their maps during an

information session on Friday night when they arrive. Also, on

Friday night they must complete a challenge on the beach to determine their starting times Saturday morning.  As the challenge is a timed event, those with earlier start times have an advantage.

Saturday morning after breakfast and a post breakfast briefing, the teams receive their score booklets and head out on the trail. Each team has a different route, but all teams must complete the same challenges. They either hike or canoe to various checkpoints where they have to perform a challenge that involves skills they have learned in Scouts:  knots, lashings, fire-starting, paddling, orienteering and so on. Advisors are asked to participate during the Challenge by manning assigned checkpoints and scoring the teams on how well they perform.

Team scores are based on how well the youth work as a team to complete each challenge.  The team that finishes the course first gets bonus points but doesn't necessarily win. The winning team is the one that accumulates the most points.

Saturday evening we have fun activities such as a campfire on the beach.

Sunday morning the Venturers do a work project such as clearing fallen branches from a trail or whatever other work needs to be done as a service project for Camp Tamaracouta.

While they are out working, advisors are busy cooking for our cook off. At lunch, Venturers pile up their plates with samples of food from each group and judge which meal is the best. The winning advisor gets cheers (and maybe a prize).

After lunch, the prizes are awarded. Teams get a choice of camp and Scout related prizes, with the winning team getting first choice, first runners up getting the second choice and so on down the line.

The Challenge is a great way to apply skills learned in Scouting and to use teamwork, strategy and judgment. It’s also a great way to meet new friends and renew old friendships.

We certainly hope you will join us for an amazing time. Registration info is available at our web site: http://www.que.scouts.ca/ca/event/go-challenge or by contacting me at carole.anne.reed@gmail.com
