MESSAGE from the Council Commisioner-Russ Looker

7 April 2015

Fellow Scouters,

Last November Chris Von Roretz accepted a new challenge with the National, stepping down from his position as Council Commissioner.  For the many of you that have had the opportunity to get to know Chris over the past few years, I am sure that you wish to join us in thanking him for his outstanding dedication and contributions to you, Council and scouting in general, and in wishing him continued success in his new volunteer role as, Vice-Chairperson, Strategic Planning on the Board of Governors, Scouts Canada.

I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, Russ Looker, as your new Council Commissioner.  Some of you may already know me and I feel honoured in being selected for this position as your representative.  I am looking forward with enthusiasm to meeting with many of you and working with Kaitlyn Patterson, the recently appointed Council Youth Commissioner, and Jon Wiersma, our Council Executive Director.

Your new Council support team of Deputy Council Commissioners is now in place and includes the following individuals:

  • DCC - Marketing & Communication                   Robert Schmitt
  • DCC - Field Servicing                                              Danica Lewington
  • DCC - Council Administration and Properties   Ron Kappert
  • DCC - Training                                                          Ted MacKay
  • DCC - Recognition                                                   Victor Knowlton
  • DCC - Program & Canadian Path                          Bob Cox

One of our prime Council challenges at the moment is youth membership retention and growth and an early Council focus is direct group support, (what Council and Area can do, where required, to assist with in the operation of your group and in delivering the best possible exciting and challenging program for your scouting youth). We are currently in the process of contacting each group Commissioner personally to discussing their group successes and challenges and how we as council can assist particularly with those existing challenges.

Thank you for all that you do for scouting.

Yours in Scouting,

Russ Looker
